Abdul Carter will have to be at his best for Penn State to beat Oregon in the Big Ten championship game.

Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter celebrates a tackle during the third quarter on Sept. 28, 2024. Joe Hermitt | [email protected], Penn State’s star edge rusher, is unequivocally one of the best players in college football. Oregon is well aware of that ahead of this weekend’s Big Ten championship game.

Carter has been incredibly disruptive this season, his first at defensive end after switching from linebacker. The junior’s 91.4 pass-rushing grade on Pro Football Focus ranks second among FBS edge rushers with at least 400 snaps. His 19 1/2 tackles for loss rank third among all FBS players. And his 10 sacks are the most by a Penn State player since 2015.

“He wreaks havoc,” quarterback Dillon Gabriel said Monday. “He’s a disruptive player. Extremely physical. But also I think his ability to go from extremely physical to finesse with his speed is pretty impressive. But like anything, we have extreme confidence in our guys. And we know we’re going to be playing against a damn good team. It’s a championship.”

Oregon has allowed only 43 TFLs and 12 sacks this season, ranking fifth and 13th in the FBS, respectively. In the Ducks’ win against Ohio State in October, the Buckeyes — with Jack Sawyer, J.T. Tuimoloau and their vaunted pass rush — failed to sack Gabriel. In the Ducks’ last four games, they’ve allowed only two sacks.
