Penn State fans gathered to witness the demolition of the Beaver Stadium press box, marking the start of a major renovation project.
By the time the press box collapsed, a couple of minutes after 8 a.m. on Saturday, four inches of snow had coated the area. A few hundred Penn State fans braved temperatures in the low 20s to gather in the Stadium West parking lot, adjacent to the Bryce Jordan Center marquee. PennLive was on hand to document the event.
The Nittany Lion, Penn State’s mascot, was in attendance for the demolition along with Penn State football great Michael Mauti and Steve Jones, the Lions’ long-time football play-by-play man. In May of 2024, Penn State’s Board of Trustees approved Beaver Stadium’s $700 million renovation project, in part to enable year-round use of the stadium.football press box was last used on Dec. 21, the date of the Lions’ 38-10 college football playoff win over SMU.Prior to the demolition, Jones and Scott Mull, an executive for one of the companies involved in the renovation project, discussed part of the press box demolition process with the fans in attendance. “The event this morning is going to be short and sweet, we’re going to make a lot happen in a little bit of time,” Mull said. “But what you won’t see this morning is about a year’s worth of work that went into this, with designers, engineers, contractors … a lot of expertise went into this, pulling this all together.” Cracked Jones: “You put a year’s worth of work into this? I worked in that damn thing for 50 years. I don’t want to hear about your year’s worth of work.”“As you and Jack (Ham) were chatting it up (on the radio) on the 21st (Dec. 21), we had a bunch of people waiting at the gate for you to get out.” The demolition of the press box began the start of a large-scale demolition of the upper West side of Beaver Stadium. For the next six weeks, there will be workers on site seven days a week to demo, clear and prep the area for the construction that will take place prior to the 2025 seaso
