Penn State wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith hauls in a pass as wide receivers coach Marques Hagans looks on during practice on Aug. 30, 2023. Joe Hermitt | [email protected] Hurts’ floated downfield pass over the outstretched arms of a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back landed in the hands not of AJ Brown or DeVonta Smith but backup wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus.

“I was very, very happy for him,” Hagans said on a Thursday conference call. “I love that dude. I love everything about him. ... I’m really excited for him.” Zaccheaus was one of the first big-time receivers Hagans developed, followed by NFL draft picks Joe Reed and Dontayvion Wicks. But as Hagans recalled, Zaccheaus was initially a lightly-recruited running back out of St. Joe’s Prep.

“I think that’s something that’s really important to me. It’s not just the guys that I coached that continue to go on and play football. It’s the guys that you have the chance to impact and be a part of their lives long, long beyond football. When they become husbands, when they become fathers, when they have their first kids, those things are important. And I think that relationships that we’ve been able to foster way after football is done, that means the world to me.
