In a call with lawmakers, the vice president and infectious diseases expert say the worst hot spots are showing signs of “stabilization.”
Vice President Mike Pence and the coronavirus task force informed House lawmakers on Wednesday that the Trump administration is exploring ways to return to “normality” and could soon unveil guidance for eventually reopening the country.
“They’re starting to see, they think, this virus in some of these known hot spots begin to maybe top out,” Rep. Greg Walden told POLITICO. “There are some hopeful signs in New York and other places. But we all know there’s a long way to go.” Yet during a Q&A on the call with Democrats, Fauci told lawmakers that administration officials are developing a framework for getting back to"normality" and that he expects the White House to issue more guidance about eventually reopening society in the coming days, according to Democrats on the call.
Besides Pence and Fauci, other top officials on the call included Dr. Deborah Birx, Rear Adm. John Polowczyk and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. The same group is expected to separately brief Senate Democrats and Republicans on Thursday. While Democrats have worked closely with Mnuchin on coronavirus legislation, the briefing from Pence represented a rare moment of bipartisanship between the House majority and an administration it is often battling.
