Penang Hill currently sees about 1.3 million to 1.8 million visitors a year.
Penang Chief Minister and Penang Hill Corp chairman Chow Kon Yeow recently announced that leading integrated rolling stock and rail services company, Hartasuma Sdn Bhd, has secured the design, build, finance, operate and transfer contract for the Penang Cable Car project in Penang Hill.
Hartasuma will own the concession for this tourist attraction over the next 30 years, where it will be responsible for the DBFOT throughout the period.The cable car would help the tourist-load balancing by complementing the almost 100-year-old funicular railway from Ayer Itam. “We are getting the necessary approvals required for this project. Once secured, the actual construction phase will take between 18 and 20 months.According to Ravindran, Hartasuma partnered with Austrian-based Dopplemayr Group for the project.
The lower cable car station would be located near the Botanical Gardens and will become another iconic tourist attraction. “Our ground station is adequately distanced from the entrance of the Botanical Garden to ensure the visual and audible tranquillity that Penangites seek at the Botanical Garden is safeguarded,” said Ravindran.
