House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, San Francisco’s long-serving congresswoman, will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, on Friday.
Pelosi, who was born and raised in Baltimore, has lived in San Francisco for more than 50 years and represented most of The City since she was elected to the House of Representatives in 1987. Pelosi replaced Rep. Sala Burton, who died that year. Pelosi is widely credited with helping pass the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama’s landmark legislation that overhauled the country’s health-care system, and the Inflation Reduction Act, President Biden’s investment in green energy.
