It wasn’t just that Pele was brilliant, it was that he would try anything. He didn’t even score after his famous 1970 dummy against Uruguay, running straight past the ball in front of the goalkeeper, but it still seems like something he’d imagined in a dream and thought he’d just try out in a World Cup semi-final.
Pele’s club team, Santos in Brazil, soon saw the potential for riches from this hot property. They toured Europe playing exhibition matches one after another against high-profile opposition, for what was reportedly a £12,000 match fee, payable only if Pele was in the line-up.
