MELBOURNE, Jan 22 ― Jessica Pegula surged into the Australian Open quarter-finals in straight sets on Sunday and now looks the woman to beat after world number one Iga Swiatek was knocked out.
Elena Rybakina’s victory over Swiatek means the top two seeds in the men’s and women’s singles are out before the quarter-finals for the first time since the Open era began in 1968. “I thought I served really well and I had a lot of break-point chances in the first set and I didn’t really convert any of them,” said the American, who was always in control on John Cain Arena.
“I had a few choice words towards my box in the first set,” laughed Pegula, who is closing on a first Grand Slam crown.
