Making MassiveTalent with Nicolas Cage helped reawaken Pedro Pascal's passion for acting. '...he’s still challenging himself, he’s super prepared, he’s coming up with new ideas...'
Pedro Pascal says his time with Nicolas Cage making The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent reawakened a passion for acting. Since supporting roles like Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones season 4 and Javier Peña on Narcos, Pascal has become one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. He now plays the titular character in The Mandalorian and is set to star as Joel Miller in HBO’s upcoming adaptation of The Last of Us.
In Tom Gormican’s film, Pascal plays the billionaire mega-fan, Javi, who pays a cash-strapped Cage to appear at his birthday party and masquerade as some of his most iconic characters. Javi is actually a drug kingpin and Cage attends the party as an informant for the CIA. Like the character he plays, Pascal is quite the Cage fan himself and more than enjoyed their time working together on The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
“There was almost something about, I don’t know, reawakening the things that you care about and why you got into it in the first place, because he’s still challenging himself, he’s super prepared, he’s coming up with new ideas, and, honestly, it was an incredible challenge to rise to but it was mostly a really beautiful inspiration and a reminder of why I had this fantasy to start with and then study and then job. It was because of how he feels and how he treats acting.
Despite its tongue-in-cheek title, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is, in many ways, a celebration of the long and diverse career of Cage. The 57-year-old actor has starred in some of the greatest films of all time, as well as some of the worst. Despite honors like an Academy Award for Leaving Las Vegas , Razzie nominations, and a reputation for taking any role has resulted in Cage becoming overtly memeable.
Cage has famously dubbed his acting style as “Nouveau Shamanic,” which simply means to augment your imagination so that your performance doesn’t seem fake. In short, Cage takes what he does very seriously and really enjoys it. For Pascal, working with Cage on his meta comedy rather than in a self-serious drama sounds like it was a dream come true. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent could’ve easily made a mockery of its proceedings.
