Police witnessed the two people being struck when they responded to an illegal rave in a Kooyong park.

A pedestrian is dead and another is in hospital after being hit by a car in Melbourne's inner south-east.

Police had just arrived to investigate a report of an illegal rave at a park on Glenferrie Road in Kooyong when they witnessed the two being struck in a car park at around 1:10am on Sunday.The other was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.The driver of the car was arrested and will be interviewed by police.

Professional Standards Command has been called in, which a police spokesperson said is normal protocol when officers are in the vicinity of a fatal collision.
