The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, the San Francisco Police Department said in an email.
The incident occurred at about 5:40 a.m. at Franklin and Eddy streets, just a block off Van Ness Avenue and near Cathedral Hill and Jefferson Square Park, the San Francisco police said. Officers responded to the scene and provided life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the individual was declared deceased at the scene, according to the news release. The preliminary investigation revealed that"impairment due to drugs or alcohol does not appear to be a factor," police said.
The first pedestrian death of 2023 occurred on Jan. 1 at Potrero Avenue and Alameda Street in Potrero Hill, according to Walk SF, a local pedestrian advocacy group.was leaving a New Year's Day party when she was hit and killed by a driver who fled the scene. On Jan. 10, Wan Mei Tan, a 64-year-old woman, was struck by a driver and killed at 16th and Valencia streets in the Mission District, according to Walk SF. A busy commercial area with a BART station and SFMTA bus stops, the intersection is a high-traffic area for both vehicles and pedestrians.
“The intersection where this crash happened is a perfect example of where proven safety improvements could have made the difference, but they’re happening far too slowly,” Medeiros said in a news release.
