The community is mourning the loss of Harry Chandler , a Pearl Harbor survivor who passed away yesterday evening at his home in Tequesta, Florida, at the age of 103. Harry Chandler was just 20 years old when he served as a hospital corpsman during the infamous attack on Dec. 7, 1941. Reflecting on that fateful day, Chandler once said, 'The bombs dropped, and the torpedoes. Hittin' the... Ah. Battleships. I hope. We never thought that... we would be hit the way we were.
I saw the Arizona blow up, I saw the Oklahoma capsize. Saw the West Virginia go down. I saw the Nevada... grounding itself.' Chandler recounted his experience from Mobile Hospital No. 2 on IE Heights, where he had a clear view of the harbor. 'It was something you really couldn't believe,' he said. 'And it was afterwards, in the quiet, that we got scared. My God, we could have been killed. But we were lucky.” Stefany Valderrama, who had the honor of interviewing Chandler, expressed her admiration for him. 'I've interviewed so many people in those almost last 10 years, and I've never walked away from an interview just so in awe of someone,' she said. 'His memory, he remembered all of those moments and he talked about it so... eloquently and clearly.' Chandler is one of the oldest living survivors from Pearl Harbor, and his firsthand accounts have been invaluable. Valderrama added, 'I'm so glad that we did these stories with him over the last couple of years because we do really get to, you know, share what was his story and the story of so many men that were there at Pearl Harbor when that happened.' While no ceremonies have been announced yet to honor Chandler's life, the community remains committed to keeping his stories alive. Valderrama plans to repost her interviews with Chandler on her Facebook page to ensure his legacy endures
