'Peace or Love' by Kings of Convenience Review: The Norwegian duo harken back to their folk-pop roots with their first album in over a decade

Sometimes the title of a debut album tells you everything you need to know about a new band: MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams” introduced us to a Detroit outfit that played furiously intense rock, and “Straight Outta Compton” suggested that N.W.A. would serve up street-life reality rap from its home base in Los Angeles County.

The opening “Rumours,” with its repeated refrain of “Don’t let them tell you who you are,” is a good example of how they build affecting songs from simple affirmations. The pair’s Norwegian accents, often only slightly detectable, impart a layer of humanity, a small but regular distinction in music that might otherwise seem too perfect. Simon & Garfunkel have been a near-constant reference point for Kings of Convenience and slow, drifting ballads like this show that earlier duo’s impact.

On “Love Is a Lonely Thing,” a highlight from the record’s midpoint, Canadian singer Leslie Feist, who contributed to a pair of songs on “Riot on an Empty Street” and records under her surname, joins in. Mr. Øye sings and strums alone on the first couple of verses, establishing the theme, and then he hands the song over to Ms. Feist, whose subtly expressive, quavering voice is a perfect fit for the Kings of Convenience style.
