The ever-popular PDC World Darts Championship could see a huge change in the not too distant future.
The PDC World Darts Championship is gearing up for a significant change - with hopes to expand the playing field to 128 in time for the 2026 edition at Ally Pally. Since 2018, the tournament has featured 96 competitors - with two thirds starting in the opening round and the top 32 seeds earning byes into the second round. This structure is set to stay for the 2025 championship, kicking off in December, where Luke Humphries will defend his crown. But the following year could see an overhaul.
During a sit-down with the Online Darts YouTube channel, Porter said: 'Yeah, we are close to that,' regarding the potential increase. He added: 'It's not there yet, but we are quite close to that.' He indicated that the expansion would 'hopefully' take effect from the 2026 championship.
