The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) partially reopened on Sunday, allowing traffic flow after the destructive Palisades Fire. The highway's full reopening was delayed due to safety concerns and looting risks, with LAPD handing over responsibility to the CHP and National Guard.

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) partially reopened on Sunday morning, allowing traffic to flow again after the devastating Palisades Fire . The northernmost stretch in Malibu became accessible, but the reopening of the remaining section in the Pacific Palisades area was delayed. Los Angeles city officials decided to keep checkpoints in place due to concerns about public safety and looting.

The LAPD will hand over responsibility for Palisades access to the California Highway Patrol and the National Guard, allowing the LAPD to focus on citywide services. Mayor Karen Bass stated, 'We continue to adapt in real time to this dynamic situation. This plan secures the Palisades and eases the strain on LAPD, whose ability to respond across LA has been impacted for nearly one month.' The PCH fully reopened on Monday morning with one lane in each direction and limited speed from Santa Monica northwest to the Ventura County line. Authorities are closely monitoring the highway for hazards like mud and debris flows as rain is predicted to start on Tuesday. The PCH closure came after the massive Palisades Fire, which began on January 12th, 2025, and ravaged through parts of Los Angeles County. The inferno destroyed or damaged over 10,000 buildings and tragically claimed at least 17 lives. The fire also caused significant displacement, forcing thousands from their homes
