Ken Paxton has a clever ploy to stay in the Texas Senate race. The Texas AG is going to the mats for Trump’s beloved SAVE Act, making it much harder for the president to push him out in favor of incumbent John Cornyn.
to endorse the incumbent and head off an extended slugfest that would leave the winner badly damaged and cost the GOP many hundreds of millions of dollars better spent elsewhere. Trump quickly appeared to comply with apromising to make his choice known “soon,” after which the unlucky “loser” of his favor would be expected to “immediately” withdraw from the race, voters be damned.
Instead of placing his fate in Trump’s blemished hands, Paxton, perhaps wanting to remind people that the president doesn’t have the power to cancel elections, said he was inclined to stay in anyway, as Fox Newsif Trump backed Cornyn, Paxton, a MAGA firebrand and longtime Trump supporter and ally, said no in an interview with Real America’s Voice. “I’ve spent a year of my life campaigning against John Cornyn because John has not represented the people of Texas well,” Paxton argued. “He’s been against Trump in both of his elections, said he shouldn’t run last time. … The people of Texas, at least the Republicans, would like something different.” And a source in Paxton’s political orbit emphasized to Fox News Digital that the Texas attorney general isn’t getting out of the race. Paxton has identified himself with Trump for years now, but he was first elected to his current office in 2014 and was elected to the legislature back in 2002. He was a hard-core conservative activist and a legal warrior against the Obama administration long before Trump came down the Trump Tower escalator and into politics. So he probably doesn’t view himself as purely the president’s puppet, particularly since he can always blame the godless RINO Establishment of badgering Trump into backing Cornyn. But then Paxton came up with a devilishly clever way to express a conditional willingness to get out of the Senate race. He Paxton is abundantly aware that killing the filibuster is the one and only thing Senate Republicans will, as they’ve made clear more times than you can count . After Trump has gone home to Mar-a-Lago, and perhaps even as soon as next year, they may have to deal with a Democratic Senate majority, and they aren’t about to give up their one real weapon for thwarting it. So far, Trump hasn’t gone completely nuclear on the topic. But on the other hand, is he really going to bounce Paxton out of a Senate runoff spot for being more zealous than Cornyn on addressing thePerhaps Cornyn will try to finesse the issue by suddenly finding Jesus on the filibuster and pretending he’ll do anything to stop those illegal aliens from voting . But Paxton’s demanding action, not posturing, from people like Thune who are raising the vast sums of money Cornyn is relying on to save his sagging political prospects. So he may keep on forging ahead, recognizing how difficult it is for Trump to demand that he loyally drop out for loyally backing his SAVE Act crusade to the hilt. Who knows; Trump could decide to endorse Paxton after all to get himself out of this quandary. Cornyn and his friends might yet regret pushing the president into making a choice.Margaret Hartmann The UFC is holding a cage match to celebrate America’s 250th birthday .
