After a heated campaign, Texas Attorney General Paxton holds off a challenge from Land Commissioner George P. Bush and moves on to the general election in November.

AUSTIN, Texas — Republican Ken Paxton evaded challenger, Land Commissioner George P. Bush, to secure his party’s nomination for Texas attorney general for a third time.Paxton drew several challengers in the primary, with Bush forcing the runoff. Bush made Paxton’s trouble with an ongoing FBI investigation and accusations of corruption a primary focus of his campaign. Paxton is also still awaiting trial on securities fraud charges after being indicted in 2015.

Paxton also drew criticism from people within his party. Last week W Sen. John Cornyn of Texas publicly criticized Paxton, calling his legal battles an “embarrassment."Bush is the only member of his famous family still in office, but Tuesday's loss means he will now exit in January. Paxton, a two-term incumbent, won with the endorsement of Donald Trump, who has mocked and antagonized the Bush family on his way to taking their mantle as the GOP's standard-bearer.
