A Cash Converters manager has won a £50,000 payout after suffering severe anxiety and depression due to a ‘borderline oppressive’ letter from her boss.
Gemma Cairns was horrified by the ‘harsh’ letter from Garry Lowes, which branded her demeanour ‘disrespectful, undermining, arrogant, privileged and wholly unacceptable’. The lengthy document contained a slew of criticisms and accused her of underperforming, failing to hit targets, and threatened her with the sack.After criticising Miss Cairns, Mr Lowes, who had just replaced Miss Cairns’ partner as operational manager, wrote: ‘My viewpoint is not a matter open to discussion or one to be disputed by you’.
The letter caused Miss Cairns to suffer mental health issues and four days after receiving it, she began a period of sickness absence which lasted around 18 months.Miss Cairns claimed the company was trying to ‘manage her out’ after her ‘life partner’ left his role as a director at the firm and was succeeded by Mr Lowes.
