The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced that Paul Simonon 's iconic bass, which was famously smashed during a 1979 Clash concert at The Palladium in New York City, will be on loan at the museum's new Smithfield Market site in London .
The bass guitar, a Fender Precision, was photographed by legendary snapper Pennie Smith and has been housed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland for many years. Simonon smashed the instrument in frustration at the venue bouncers who were not allowing the audience to stand for the show, explaining in a 2011 interview that 'that frustrated me to the point that I destroyed this bass guitar.
' The new Smithfield Market site is set to open to the public on November 28, marking the culmination of several years of regeneration work on the historic market. The museum will feature a wide range of musical items, including the tablas belonging to British Bhangra pioneer Kuljit Bhamra, and will also host regular house parties curated by local club Fabric.
The museum's new location in Smithfield Market will play a significant part in London's cultural life, given the area's rich history dating back almost a thousand years.
