. It was the moment from the 1985 film where Pee-wee dances in platform shoes in a bar filled with aggressive bikers. Throughout his dance, these hard-edged truckers turn from their regular brute selves into smiling, laughing fans of Pee-wee. That moment perfectly captures the power of Paul Reuben's brilliance. His work was universal. Watching his show or his films, you never really knew if they were meant for kids or adults. Everyone loved Pee-wee, including bikers.
It's telling that Paul Reubens never revealed his cancer until his passing. It's almost as if he knew Pee-wee Herman lived in our hearts and Pee-wee could never have cancer. He kept the dream of Pee-wee alive until the end. In the statement posted to his Instagram, Reubens' said,"Please accept my apology for not going public with what I've been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you."
His team also released a statement, saying,"Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness. Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit.
It's hard to say goodbye to talents like Reubens, because they were always so much more than just someone from something we, as a society, loved as a kid. As we grew up, our admiration of Pee-wee changed. We could see how subversive his work was, how intelligent what he did was, and how powerful his message was, even though it was wrapped in a silly little package. He was my generation's Mister Rogers.
