Paul Reubens, the actor known to millions for his portrayal of Pee-wee Herman, has died, according to a July 31 post on his official Facebook page. He was 70.
"Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness," the post said.
"Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit."Reubens emerged as an enormous star in 1985 in the movie"Pee-wee's Big Adventure," a comedy in which the childlike Pee-wee Herman sets out to find his cherished lost bike.
He also enjoyed success on the small screen with his Saturday morning show,"Pee-wee's Playhouse," which ran from 1986 until 1990 on CBS.Reubens also endured his share of controversy. In 1991, he was arrested after authorities said he masturbated in a Florida adult movie theater, prompting him to retreat from the public eye.
He would subsequently appear in a wide range of projects over the years, including the movie"Blow," as well as various shows, including an Emmy-nominated guest role on"Murphy Brown" in 1995,"Ally McBeal,""Reno 911,""Gotham,""The Blacklist" and"The Conners."
