She minimized her needs as she felt pressure to ease the financial burden on her mom.
Teej Mercer, the project’s founder, hopes to provide a sense of community and support to the students through its network of volunteers who pitched in funds, helped the students move in or designed the rooms. Removing the pressures and concerns about some of their day-to-day needs allows the students to focus solely on excelling at the college, she said.
“I am truly surprised, overwhelmed. It’s a blessing because ... that’s a lot of less things that I have to worry about for her and provide, and so I’m grateful,” Gray said. All 13 students, who arrived from Dallas and across the country, received basic essentials, a monthly cleaning and household box subscription as well as a mini refrigerator.
