He recalled thinking, despite others telling him he had lived the life and got the T-shirt, that he had not even lived his life yet and hoped he was only halfway through. The cancer diagnosis remains one of the scariest moments of his life; he could not remember what the doctor said after hearing the word cancer. He emphasizes the critical importance of taking someone to medical appointments because shock can cause mental shutdown.
Now 58, Merson considers himself fortunate to reflect on his diagnosis, unlike thousands of Britons who die from melanoma annually. He recognizes the warning signs he ignored. He loved the sun, often trained shirtless during his career, and sunscreen awareness was not as widespread as today. Sun exposure and sunbeds are leading causes of melanoma due to ultraviolet radiation penetrating the skin, causing moles to develop over time.
For years, Merson noticed a mole on his back changing but delayed getting it checked. Even when it continued to grow-a classic warning sign-he turned a blind eye. In September 2012, the mole bled through his white T-shirt while on holiday with his kids, finally prompting him to seek help. Doctors told Merson that if he had waited another two months, the cancer would likely have spread.
Within a day, surgeons removed the mole, leaving 50 stitches on his back. He was fortunate to access private treatment, allowing swift action.
However, the fear lingered. Every six months, he returned to Harley Street for scans, sitting in waiting rooms alongside others who did not always receive good news. That experience spurred him to champion a sun safety campaign with Boots and Macmillan Cancer Support, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of sun protection.
He urges Britons to take care during hot summers, noting that melanoma cases have surged by almost a third in the UK over the past decade, with around 19,400 new cases and 2,600 deaths annually. Merson's biggest regret is that his diagnosis could have been prevented. He hopes his story encourages people to check their skin regularly and use sunscreen. The campaign emphasizes that ignoring mole changes can be deadly, and early detection saves lives.
His journey from celebrated footballer to cancer survivor underscores that health is paramount, regardless of fame. He now advocates for simple measures like wearing SPF, avoiding sunbeds, and seeking medical advice for any suspicious moles. His message is clear: do not delay, because a few minutes of prevention can mean the difference between life and death
