Former prime mister Paul Keating’s comments about China on Wednesday showed a “complete misunderstanding of geopolitics”, says former foreign minister Alexander Downer.

“I thought his speech was, to say the least, quite eccentric really,” Mr Downer told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

“He hates the British and he doesn’t like the Americans much more and he would like us to be much more neutral in relation to China. “So it’s not just about the submarines, that he wants to save money by buying diesel submarines, but he doesn’t believe in what I’ve been describing – the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region, he thinks that China are the good guys and you don’t have to worry about them.”
