ESPN Radio host Paul Finebaum recalls a crucial lesson he learned during his time as a newspaper columnist.

“One thing I did early on I will never do again is I criticized players,” he said. “In the early ‘80s, I think Alabama was heading toward its first losing season in 25 years. I called the players a bunch of chumps and losers.”“I learned from that, and I stopped,” Finebaum said. “I never again criticized a player individually. It was a great learning experience. Coaches? It never bothered me, criticizing them.
He said every fan base always wants to talk about the way it used to be. With Crimson Tide fans, it’s a little different. He said as he began to study the fan bases, the good fortune of Alabama hiring Nick Saban as head coach in 2007 changed everything for him, generating more interest from his callers as well as the national media before he was ultimately hired at ESPN.
