'A campaign of 50 years searching for truth.' Nationalist politician Patsy Kelly was murdered in 1974. Now the Police Ombudsman has said the inquiry into his killing was 'wholly inadequate'. His son - also called Patsy - says it's an emotional day.

Patsy Kelly's body was found in a County Fermanagh lake about 20 miles from where he worked in County TyroneThe family of a nationalist politician murdered almost 50 years ago have said they feel vindicated byat a pub in Trillick, County Tyrone in 1974.Patsy Kelly's son said it was one of the report's most damning elements.

She also found evidence of collusive behaviour, as RUC special branch had withheld intelligence from the original murder investigation. "The state has acted to put as many obstacles and obstructions in our way for decades but today the truth, in some form, has come out," he said.He said that the report had not changed what the family believed happened.

Det Ch Supt Ian Saunders, head of the PSNI's Legacy Investigation Branch, said Mr Kelly was the "innocent victim of a brutal sectarian murder". "Policing has developed enormously over the past forty nine years and the Police Service of Northern Ireland now have greatly improved policies and procedures which guide how we approach criminal investigations and I note the comments of the Police Ombudsman regarding the re-investigation in 2003-2005.
