Patrons of a Starbucks on the northern edge of San Francisco’s Financial District don’t want the company to close what they say is their community hub cafe
After watching a series of local businesses close in recent years, patrons of the Starbucks at 99 Jackson St. on the north edge of San Francisco ’s Financial District said they were horrified last week to learn that the giant coffee-seller plans to close their neighborhood’s 30-year-old cafe early next month.
‘It’s the place where we can gather to meet people, have conversations,” said Bash, a retired city planner who has lived at Gateway since 2020. The closing of the cafe would be just the latest demoralizing loss of neighborhood serving retail shops, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread adoption of remote work caused a drop in the number of people visiting downtown, according to Taylor.
Trembley said she talked with the company’s regional director and was told the decision to close the store was “complicated.” She said she asked if there was anything to be done, and was told no. “We don’t understand, because we fit exactly the vision of the new CEO,” she said. Advocates even promised to rustle up business for Starbucks.
