Patients wait outside for Emergency services vehilces to arrive at Bheki Mlangeni hospital in Soweto.JOHANNESBURG - Bheki Mlangeni Hospital in Soweto caught fire after a building block burst into flames on Monday.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said patients were quickly evacuated from the facility as they managed to contain the fire."Other areas of the building were not affected, there was minor damage"An estimated 175 patients were affected by the blaze and some had to be rushed to the hospital parking lot.The Gauteng Health Department said it cannot yet reveal what caused the fire.
"Bheki Mlangeni Hospital is one of our busiest facilities in Gauteng..... the demand is excessive so any stoppage or functioning of one of our facilities would be a very big blow," Lukhele said. "It is for that reason that we would want to ask the other members of government facilities to engage with this exercise speedily so that we can get back to normal."
