Professor James Naismith, director of the Rosalind Franklin Institute at the University of Oxford, spoke out as ‘For those who do not recover but die, data from China suggests this takes around another four days. The tragic deaths today will be from people infected roughly a month ago. It is inevitable that there will be more tragedies for families ahead.’Professor Naismith emphasised that by following government advice, the British public can ‘reduce the final death toll’.
The professor also noted that at this stage, a daily decrease in the number of deaths could be ‘due to random factors’, meaning it is not yet indicative of the virus slowing down. He said 209 deaths were a ‘terrible loss’.It is too early to infer a trend from the UK death toll Eleanor Riley, professor of immunology and infectious disease, University of Edinburgh, said it would be ‘most unwise’ to infer any trend from ‘a single day’s data’.
