A recent survey reveals that a majority of patients, including those with cancer and autoimmune diseases, want their doctors to factor in out-of-pocket costs when recommending treatments. The survey highlights the growing financial burden of cancer care and the need for open communication between patients and physicians regarding treatment affordability.

Professor of Medical Oncology and Therapeutics Research, City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center; President, Medicine & Science, City of Hope Atlanta, Chicago, PhoenixHello. I’m Dr Maurie Markman from City of Hope. I’d like to very briefly discuss an interesting analysis that was recently reported in

In this particular survey, they looked at 1566 participants, including patients who had cancer and about one third who had autoimmune disease, who were also receiving very expensive medications. These are individuals who had copays. The question was, how important are these discussions? Now, obviously, this is a very difficult issue. The doctors always want to do what’s best for their patients. They have very little control over who pays for what, but clearly this appears to be a very strong statement by patients.

At the discussion level, this is what patients are asking. They want a discussion of the issues. Of course, they’re also saying, please consider these costs when you make these recommendations.

Trump has repeatedly urged NATO allies to contribute more towards defense, arguing that the U.S. has shouldered the burden for European security for too long. This call echoes a growing sentiment within NATO since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with Secretary-General Mark Rutte stating that the current 2% target is insufficient.
