Path of Exile 2 is set to receive its next major Early Access update, Return of the Ancients, which overhauls the endgame and adds new Ascendancy Classes. To mark the occasion, a free weekend runs from May 29 to June 1, letting players try the full game at no cost.
The action RPG genre is packed with excellent titles, but one perennial favorite is Path of Exile 2 from Grinding Gear Games. Even thirteen years after its launch, the original Path of Exile remains a staple on Steam, and its sequel, still in Early Access, is swiftly gaining momentum.
Although the full release will be free-to-play, the Early Access version, which launched in late 2024, already offers a substantial experience. Many fans are eagerly awaiting the polished 1.0 version, but there's plenty to enjoy right now. The game is about to receive a major update called Return of the Ancients, which further expands its content. Path of Exile 2 currently features twelve distinct playable classes, each with multiple Ascendancy options for deep customization.
Players can embark on the sprawling campaign solo or team up with up to five friends in six-player cooperative play. The world of Wraeclast is filled with hundreds of unique monsters, providing constant combat challenges. The next Early Access update, Return of the Ancients, will revamp the endgame into a more structured narrative with clearer progression, a significant improvement for those who appreciate story-driven action RPGs.
The update also introduces a new League and additional Ascendancy Classes, alongside numerous quality-of-life tweaks based on community feedback. To celebrate the update, Grinding Gear Games is hosting a free weekend. Starting May 29th at 4 PM Eastern Time, players can download and explore the entire game, including the new update, at no cost until June 1st. There are no playtime limits, and all progress will be saved to your account for future sessions.
The free weekend is accessible via the GGG launcher, Steam, Xbox, and the Epic Games Store, though unfortunately not on PlayStation 5 this time. During this period, the game will also be on sale for 50% off across all supported platforms until June 12th. If you enjoy the trial, you can continue with the Early Access supporter pack for fifteen dollars, or simply wait for the 1.0 launch when the game becomes completely free-to-play for everyone.
Progress from the free weekend carries over regardless. Path of Exile 2 is available now in Early Access for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The Return of the Ancients update goes live on all platforms around May 29th at 4 PM ET
