Some spectators travel to the event solely for the chance to eat from the now-famous strawberry shortcake, Staley says, which fills a massive room in the fairgrounds.
“It’s like putting together a jigsaw puzzle and then, at the end, it’s this absolutely beautiful cake.”Elsewhere, strawberries can be purchased to eat while roaming the grounds or to sample in the form of chocolate-covered strawberries, strawberry margaritas, strawberry wine, strawberry lemonade, strawberry seltzer and more.
Also on tap is a dog show, petting zoo, foam zone, pig races, mutton bustin’, car show, pet adoptions, mud volleyball, tug-of-war and photo ops with a strawberry mascot. Each year, event proceeds fund college scholarships. This year, 25 graduating seniors from Pasadena, Deer Park, La Porte and surrounding areas will be awarded gifts totaling $50,000.
