The next Speaker should have “excellent interpersonal relationship” with the members of Congress to shepherd the immediate passage of President Duterte’s priority legislative measures, Anakalusugan party-list Representative-elect Mike Defensor said Tuesday.
The former Cabinet member of the previous Arroyo administration said among the contenders for the Speakership race, Leyte Representative-elect Martin Romualdez and Taguig Representative-elect Alan Peter Cayetano have an edge for their “experience, competence, and caliber.”
Romualdez is the president of the Philippine Constitution Association and the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats . He served as House Independent Bloc leader of the previous 16th Congress or during the Aquino administration. Also, those vying for the Speakership post are Marinduque Rep. Lord Alan Velasco, former Speaker and Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez, and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales.
“When you speak of the speakership, you need to have an excellent interpersonal relationship with each and every member of the House and clearly with the mandate given to Congressman Romualdez, it goes to show his good relationship with the majority of lawmakers,” he said.
