Arriving at a gathering of the Political Cabinet on Tuesday, every senior minister found a red plastic folder on the table in front of them emblazoned with the slogan “Change Begins”. That’s the snappy headline of Labour’s annual party conference which kicks off in Liverpool on Sunday.
His long-held analysis is that voters are turned off by politicians making promises that aren’t fulfilled; that the cynical, grumpy attitude of “a plague on both your houses” against the Tories and Labour becomes a symptom of a Britain only surrendering to slow decline.He is concerned a calcified cynicism could set in if Labour doesn’t see through its promise to build more homes and fix public services.
But Starmer may be in more immediate trouble if voters draw unflattering comparisons with Johnson’s love of a freebie against a backdrop of difficult public spending decisions. Theis not dissimilar in the public’s mind to designer glasses and smart new clothes Labour will spend next week talking up their triumphs at the same time as reinforcing the very real sense of dismay at the chaos they inherited from the Conservatives. “I knew it was going to be bad, I just didn’t know it was going to be this bad,” one Cabinet minister told, referring to the “mess” they found in their government department. “It was great to be in the building but it’s not only overwhelming, it’s quite isolating.
