A section of the Santa Cruz Wharf under construction partially collapsed into the ocean on Monday as a major storm brought heavy surf and potential hurricane-force winds to the region. Two people were rescued by lifeguards, and a third person swam to safety. No serious injuries were reported.

Lifeguards rescued two people from the water and a third person was able to swim to safety, officials with Santa Cruz Fire Department said. No one had serious injuries, Mayor Fred Keeley said. Tony Elliot, the head of the Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department, estimated that about 150 feet of the end of the wharf fell into the water around 12:45 p.m. It was immediately evacuated and will remain closed indefinitely.
