The MTA warns drivers to stay away, and says there will be heavy traffic in eastern Manhattan.
Part of the Queens-Midtown tunnel remained closed mid-afternoon Wednesday afternoon because of a "water condition," according to the MTA.
By mid-afternoon, the north tube of the tunnel had reopened, but the south side remained closed as a contractor continued to investigate a hole discovered there, an MTA spokesperson said. Both tubes of the tunnel were initially closed around 1:30 p.m., about 40 minutes after the issue was discovered, they said.
The MTA was still expecting heavy delays in the area of the tunnel. Buses around eastern Manhattan were running with significant delays. An initial social media alert from the MTA described the issue as a water main break, but a spokesperson said that was incorrect, and that the incident was described as a "water condition." Water had entered the tunnel, and the issue was being investigated to see where it was coming from, the spokesperson said.
