The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch at 3:52 a.m. on Friday valid from Saturday 1 p.m. until Sunday 5 a.m. for Cambria, Blair, Somerset and Bedford counties.
The weather service says to expect, "Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations up to one inch followed by possible ice accumulations between two and three tenths of an inch."
"Power outages and tree damage are possible due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible in areas of significant ice accumulation on untreated roads," comments the weather service. "Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation."Winter's icy grip often turns roads treacherous, leading to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries each year.
