Are more guns the answer to keeping kids safe in the classroom?
In 2022 Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed House Bill 99 into law which allows local school boards to decide if their staff can carry firearms.
Unfortunately with the increase in school shootings and gun violence across the country, Parma is just one example of a district that’s changed its policy by arming some faculty members. Dr. Smialek says right now they have 3 armed staff members who are part of their security team as well as 3 school resource officers.
“I would make this decision again,” he said. “I mean, if it’s the right staff members, if it’s a small number of your staff members, we do not anticipate arming teachers. We do not anticipate arming door monitors.”“I think that you’re going to continue to see school districts look to take further steps, to harden themselves, and this is one step,” said Dr. Smialek.
