Parma is currently planning the next round of Ohio Environmental Protection Agency-mandated septic-to-sewer conversions in the city.
“We picked that street because the pavement conditions are in poor shape,” Parma Service Director Tony Vannello said. “There’s some storm sewer improvements on that street that will be a part of this project as well.
It’s just all about trying to prioritize the areas of the city that need the most work.” Mayor Tim DeGeeter added, “Obviously, we want to get the sewer project done first before we go and do anything with the road.” The Craigleigh Drive improvement project -- located west of Ridge Road and south of West Sprague Road -- involves the construction of new sanitary sewer and connections to eliminate failing septic systems. Currently estimated at $3 million, the project will begin engineering design work as early as next year, with a 2025 or 2026 start date. City Engineer Hasmukh Patel said the latter will be tied to securing enough funding to reduce resident assessments. So far, the city has received $700,000 in Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District 2024 Member Community Infrastructure Program funding. Not only is the city waiting to hear back about whether it will receive an additional $1.25 million in federal funding, but Parma this month is applying for $750,000 in the form of a grant and loan from the Ohio Public Works Commission. “This project is another fine example of what we try to do here -- be creative and find solutions,” DeGeeter said.Over the better part of the last two decades, Parma has completed 922 septic-to-sewer conversions of nearly 1,300 EPA-mandated projects in the community of 32,000 residences.Next on the city’s radar are 61 conversions on the currently under construction West Sprague Road that are expected to go online in the next two years.
