Doctors say the problem is that those situations are not black and white.
Before Senate Bill 8, the study said doctors would have offered the option to terminate the pregnancies. But because doctors detected fetal cardiac activity, intervention was delayed until there was an “immediate threat to maternal life,” the study said. Women waited an average of nine days before getting infections, going into spontaneous labor or their fetuses died.
Policies vary from one health care institution to another depending on how they interpret the abortion restrictions, according to aOne doctor reported their hospital no longer treats certain ectopic pregnancies, which are never viable. Some providers believed they had to delay abortions until the patients’ health worsened to a point where their life was threatened.
