David Hogg , a survivor of the 2018 shooting at his high school in Parkland, Florida, and a prominent anti-violence activist, has announced his candidacy for vice chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). The 24-year-old aims to attract young voters who have increasingly gravitated towards the Republican Party.
Hogg acknowledged the significant shift in young voter preference, particularly after the November elections where young voters, who largely supported President Joe Biden in 2020, moved towards the right. He emphasized the need for a renewed focus on youth outreach and a collaborative environment within the Democratic Party. Hogg also pointed to the exodus of people from traditionally Democratic states to Republican states, attributing it to the party's failure to adequately address the housing crisis. He warned that neglecting this issue could have disastrous consequences for the party by 2030. Following the shooting, Hogg co-founded March For Our Lives, an organization advocating for gun control. He later established Leaders We Deserve, a group dedicated to electing young individuals to public office. Hogg's candidacy comes amidst ongoing discussions surrounding new DNC leadership, as current Chair Jaime Harrison announced his resignation. The party is currently undergoing a period of transition and introspection after losing the White House to Donald Trump in 2016. Candidates for DNC chair will participate in forums in January, followed by a vote by the committee's membership on February 1. Other prominent contenders for the position include Ken Martin, Ben Wikler, Martin O'Malley, and James Skoufis
