ICYMI: Parking requirements at new apartments and housing across Canada — via drivingdotca InfoForDrivers

In North America, the standard parking space dimensions range is roughly 8.5 to 9 feet wide by 18 feet long . Parking lots need driving aisles between rows, generally ranging between 14 to 24 feet depending on if they are a one- or two-way aisle. Space for just 30 cars can take upwards of 10,000 square feet, about six 35×50 residential building lots in southern Ontario suburbia.

The twist? Barely fewer than 50 parking spaces are part of the plan, most of which are underground since the base of this proposed building consumes over 90 per cent of its lot size — a space currently vacant. That parking-to-apartment ratio is unusual for this town, a municipality with little to speak of in the way of public transport, no Uber service, and an ‘active transportation plan’ consisting of bike lanes and walking paths that’s still in its infancy.

Most interesting was the mayor’s take. Operating as the seventh council member and potential tie-breaking vote, he tended to talk down concerns with the plan and argued against stats brought to the table by one councillor suggesting there are a growing number of cars in Nova Scotia. This stat was curtly dismissed by the mayor, without evidence, as being statistics for urban Halifax.
