Residents near West Seattle High School on Walnut Ave Southwest are facing a severe parking shortage due to the school's limited campus parking. The situation has worsened since the school district installed portable classrooms, eliminating 30 parking spaces. Neighbors say the street is constantly filled with cars belonging to school staff and students, leaving them with no parking options. Despite attempts to work with the city and school district, solutions have been elusive. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has deemed the area ineligible for a Restricted Parking Zone (RPZ) due to not meeting specific criteria.

Neighbors say there is zero street parking during the day along this stretch of Walnut Ave SW in West Seattle due to the nearby high school, and the solutions they've proposed to city officials and the school district have gone nowhere.

Residents who live near West Seattle High School along Walnut Ave Southwest said they have been seeing bumper-to-bumper vehicles lining the curb ever since the school got rid of some parking on its campus. “Our friends are as elderly as we are, and they can't walk the distance required to reach us from any available parking space, so they just don't visit us anymore,” Beatrice Metzelaar said. People who live in the neighborhood said every weekday morning, staff and students at West Seattle High School take up any of the remaining spaces on the street.

“I asked for a two-hour permit for parking, except for residents, or four-hour parking. They said that's not possible,” Goodwin said.
