PARIS — Lee Kiefer first fenced at an international competition when she was 14 years old. For the first few years, the U.S. women’s foil team rarely escaped the first day of a major tournament. Even when it did, Kiefer could not fathom climbing a podium. The Olympics were her goal. Winning a medal at them seemed like something beyond her dreams.

The United States had never won a women’s foil Olympic medal before Kiefer’s gold in Tokyo.
