"I think most parents want their local elementary schools to remain open. I certainly do," said Bob Harden."That was one of the big reasons we decided to move here, to be close to the elementary school," said Harden.

However, that may no longer be a reality. Granite School District is looking at potential school closures on the east side of the district in Area 5: Cottonwood, Crestview, Driggs, Eastwood, Morningside, Oakridge, Oakwood, Penn, Rosecrest, and Upland Terrace. Andrea Stringham, a spokesperson with Granite School District, explains that the Population Analysis Committee recommended the east side area be studied to evaluate critical factors. "So we're looking at each school individually. Some of the things that we look at are current enrollment and future potential enrollment, the school condition, transportation, safe walking routes, any specialized programs that are at that school specifically, and maybe some financial considerations. There’s a lot of things that we look at," said Stringham. "Community feedback is absolutely taken into consideration. It’s not going to be the ultimate deciding factor, but there are a lot of things that the PAC and the board will look at based on what the community is asking for. And changes can absolutely be made to the original plan.""It’s difficult to close a school," she said. "The main thing that we’re trying to do if a school is closed is we’re just trying to ensure that all the students will end up being successful." "I think this is a great neighborhood. I think what makes it a good neighborhood is having the elementary school," said Harden. If a closure is decided, it won’t happen until the 2026-2027 school year. The district will be holding an open house meeting at Skyline High School Auditorium on March 19. For more information, visit
