Parental stress is an urgent public health issue. That's what U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said in a newCalled " Parents Under Pressure," Murthy is calling for changes to national attitudes towards parenting and caregiving. Kivil Stasik , a mother living in New Jersey, said she agrees with the advisory.
We don't have an outlet to correct our course and really deal with the stress of all of this balancing act," Stasik said."You're balancing family life. You're balancing work. Personal responsibilities. Your time," Stasik said. Murthy said parenting is essential but the stress parents and caregivers have today is being passed down to children in direct and indirect ways. Something Stasik said she has seen firsthand.
"As a parent now I have failed because I lost control of myself when I asked her to control her own emotions. It's very difficult in that regard," said Stasik. Dr. Leigh Richardson, a licensed professional counselor, said to deal with stress, parents need to talk about it, especially with their kids. She agrees with Murthy that more resources need to be made available to help parents and caregivers thrive. In the advisory, Murthy outlined some ways to help reduce the burden on parents. For example, instituting national paid family and medical leave, implementing childcare tax credits and poverty reduction programs.
