As humans evolved and lost their body hair, this hygienic ritual transformed into a symbolic gesture of trust and social bonding. “The ‘groomer’s last kiss’ was the only step of grooming that remained unchanged for millions of years, until it ultimately became the only remaining condensed version of what had been a central social ritual,” says Lameira.The act of kissing is deeply embedded in human history and culture. Archaeological evidence from Mesopotamia, dating back 4,500 years, describes kissing in romantic and familial contexts.
