The researcher believes that the transition from grooming to kissing coincided with significant evolutionary shifts.

The practice may predate recorded history, with some researchers hypothesizing that Neanderthals and early humans exchanged kisses over 100,000 years ago.Kissing, one of humanity’s most universal symbols of affection, has a surprisingly primal origin, according to a new study. Researchers suggest that kissing evolved from grooming behaviors in great apes , shedding new light on this seemingly instinctual act.

In this behavior, apes use protruded lips and a suction motion to remove debris or parasites from each other’s fur. As humans evolved and lost their body hair, this hygienic ritual transformed into a symbolic gesture of trust and social bonding. “The ‘groomer’s last kiss’ was the only step of grooming that remained unchanged for millions of years, until it ultimately became the only remaining condensed version of what had been a central social ritual,” says Lameira. The act of kissing is deeply embedded in human history and culture. Archaeological evidence from Mesopotamia, dating back 4,500 years, describes kissing in romantic and familial contexts.

Lameira believes the transition from grooming to kissing coincided with significant evolutionary shifts. As humans lost their fur over millions of years, the hygienic purpose of grooming diminished, leaving behind a ritualistic act.
