Nuclear war and the resulting post-apocalyptic wasteland have become central themes in contemporary pop culture. From House of Dynamite to Fallout, creators are clearly fascinated by how a man-made end of civilization impacts morals, technology, and leadership structures.

One of the most grounded explorations of post-nuclear-war is Hulu's Paradise, which follows the supposed remnants of humanity forced to survive in an underground bunker, from which the show takes its name. The mysteries set up in Paradise Season 1 run far deeper than the bunker itself. From the identity of the person responsible for murdering President Cal Bradford to the nefarious forces pulling the strings, to the true state of the surface world, many questions are answered while only more are posed by the season finale. With the show's return just around the corner, many viewers will be forgiven for not remembering every little detail from Season 1, so this recap not only fills in the gaps but also tees up what Season 2 will likely focus on. 'Paradise' Season 1 Reveals the Culprit Behind Cal Bradford's Murder From the start, Season 1 of Paradise centers itself around the mystery of who killed the President. Throughout, the tense relationship between Cal and Sinatra , the billionaire responsible for Paradise's construction, appears to implicate her most, implying Cal was killed because he began to ask too many questions about the surface world. However, Paradise Season 1's finale,"The Man Who Kept the Secrets," reveals that Cal was actually killed by Trent , a construction worker who helped build the bunker and snuck inside on the day the world ended, posing as a librarian. Trent killed Cal in order to expose the truth that Sinatra and Cal knew the end was coming, yet only acted to save themselves and select others. However, the real tragedy is that Cal, in his final days, was trying to expose the nature of the surface world, which isn't as desolate as initially believed but being kept under wraps by Sinatra. When Cal goes to the library to conduct his own research, he triggers Trent into lashing out. In both Trent and Cal's cases, the belief that they are doing the right thing leads to their ending, as Trent is cornered by Secret Service agents Xavier Collins and Nicole Robinson and willingly jumps from the catwalk at the top of the bunker to his death. Cal's son, Jeremy , pledges to take up his father's mission in the final scene, vowing to build a better world than the one that's been left to him. Sinatra Is Brought to Justice and Another Villain Lurks in 'Paradise' Season 1 Sinatra may not have orchestrated Cal's murder, but she is still the central antagonist of Paradise. By secretly tasking seemingly naive Secret Service Agent Jane Driscoll with the murder of fellow agent and former mercenary Billy Pace , Sinatra keeps the truth about the surface world a secret, despite signs that there may be life. Later in the season, Xavier battles Sinatra for control of Paradise, but ends up blackmailed by her once she captures Xavier's children, leading to his pursuit of Trent to keep Sinatra's lies intact. When Xavier goes to Sinatra to report that his mission was a success, she tells him that his children have been murdered, believing Jane, who had kidnapped them, had gone rogue. Xavier nearly murders Sinatra himself before Jane shoots her in the neck, revealing that Xavier's children are safe. Posts 1 By Michael Block Once Xavier has departed, Jane tells Sinatra that her change of loyalty came from Sinatra's refusal to give her Cal's Wii. Sinatra is seen in the hospital at the end of the season, seemingly awaiting trial, and Jane gets the Wii, yet it is still unclear what Xavier knows about Jane's involvement in Sinatra's crimes, meaning that Season 2 of Paradise will carry the continuing threat of Jane as a wildcard. 'Paradise' Season 1 Hints That Xavier's Wife May Still Be Alive on the Surface One of 2025's most tense episodes of television is"The Day," set during the event when the world seemingly ends. With a supervolcano erupting in Antarctica, nuclear war begins as countries unleash their arsenals to try to secure resources for the post-disaster world. Cal is recommended to also fire the United States' nuclear weapons, yet instead seemingly chooses to activate a global EMP device, which disarms a majority of the warheads. Sinatra, who relays this information to Xavier, also plays him a recording of a radio message that reveals Xavier's wife, Teri , is alive on the surface. In the final shot of the Season 1 finale, Xavier embraces his family's proud piloting legacy by commandeering an airplane and leaving Paradise to venture out into what's left of civilization in search of Teri. Several mysteries remain heading into Paradise Season 2. It's not confirmed if Cal did truly activate the EMP, if the message Sinatra played for Xavier is real, or if Teri is still alive. Whether Jane will continue her psychopathic ambitions, and how this will affect Sinatra, Jeremy, and the other members of the bunker, is yet to be seen. Even if the warheads were stopped, it is unclear what Xavier will find and how the survivors will react to someone who could be perceived as a traitor to humanity.
