As one of Papua New Guinea's remote villages grapples with one of the worst natural disasters in its history, the prime minister is busy attending to his own political crisis.
Then there are others — emergency responders, humanitarian workers, journalists — who flock to the scene of crises, each to fulfil a certain role.
As aid workers in Enga try to count the death toll from last week's landslide, the prime minister has been playing his own numbers game, calculating whether he has enough seats to survive the week as leader.PNG political analyst Michael Kabuni said while the preoccupation with political games was disappointing to the PNG public, it wasn't a surprise.
He said the fact the government decided to continue with its scheduled parliamentary sitting was a sign of where the leaders' priorities lay. With PNG's opposition also remaining quiet on the issue, a bipartisan approach to a national crisis seems like a pipe dream. While the landslide in PNG's highlands appears to be unprecedented in its scale and impact, political turmoil is not.
