Reassurances from Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who has faced criticism for acting too cautiously, on Tuesday that there was no reason to stockpile went unheeded by spooked shoppers at supermarkets across the country. Britain’s big grocers, including market leader Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons along with discounters Aldi and Lidl, have restricted purchases.

Reuters reported on Monday that supermarket groups were working on plans to streamline their operations to enable a depleted workforce to maintain basic provisions.The government and supermarket bosses say there is enough food but that stores face demand that can only be compared to the pre-Christmas rush, an event they meticulously plan for.

“How nations themselves respond to their own demand challenges and the movement of people will be something we’ll have to keep under review,” said Strain.
